so we are off…….
Well, we start yet another cruise. Our crew assembled on the NOAA ship Nancy Foster on Friday and Saturday, and we sailed off right on schedule at 10:00 am Saturday morning. Soon after clearing the sea buoy we had a ship’s meeting followed by a science crew meeting, followed by ship safety drills. Because this cruise is mostly about mapping the ocean floor in great detail, we spent a lot of time planning how we will do that. Very early this morning (Sunday) we stopped briefly off North Carolina to conduct a multibeam sonar test. After that we proceeded to Cape Lookout to look for our benthic lander. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the lander. That is disappointing, but deep-sea research is as risky as it is expensive. Now we are continuing on our way to Balitmore Canyon where we will start the detailed mapping. The run to Baltimore Canyon will take us about a full day, but we brought plenty of work along to keep us busy.
