Brittle, brittle, little star…

September 30, 2012

written by the night crew after a particularly exciting trawl:

a bucket full of brittle stars

Just one of three buckets full of brittle stars from a particularly “stellar” trawl.

Brittle, brittle, little star,

how I wonder how numerous you are,

Down below in the ocean deep,

How difficult it is, your arms to keep.

Brittle, brittle, little star,

How I wonder do you travel far?

A mobile Ophiuroid in the mud,

Scavenging plankton and bacterial crud.

Feeling slightly overwhelmed sorting the catch...

We all felt slightly overwhelmed by the sheer number of brittle stars we had to sort in this catch!

Brittle, brittle, little star,

Counted, vouchered, and put in a jar,

Catching thousands of you in our net,

Your collective noun must be a ‘constellation’ I bet.
